"I need a bitumen storage tank" is where most enquiries start — but it's not enough to get you the right machine. A 500-ton vertical tank at a coastal terminal and a 40 m³ square tank feeding a mobile asphalt plant are both "bitumen storage tanks," yet they solve completely different problems. Choose the wrong type and you pay for it in freight, footprint, heat-up time or lost mobility.

Why tank type matters before capacity
Buyers often start with a number — "I want a 50 ton tank." But the same volume behaves very differently depending on shape and configuration. Tank type determines four things that a capacity figure alone can't:
- Footprint vs height — how much ground area the tank needs versus how tall it stands.
- Heating behaviour — the surface-area-to-volume ratio affects heat-up time and heat loss.
- Transport & installation — whether it ships in a container, needs site assembly, or moves between jobs.
- Mobility — fixed terminal storage versus a tank that follows the project.
Get the type right first; then size the capacity within it.
Type 1 — Vertical bitumen storage tanks
Vertical (cylindrical, standing) tanks are the workhorse of large, fixed storage — asphalt terminals, big mixing plants and tank farms. Because they grow upward rather than outward, they store very large volumes on a small ground footprint, which is why capacities from tens of cubic metres up to 500 tons and beyond are almost always vertical.
Their smaller top surface area relative to volume also means comparatively low heat loss per ton stored, which suits bitumen that must be kept hot continuously. The trade-offs: they usually require on-site assembly for the largest sizes and a prepared foundation, and their height needs to suit your site. Choose vertical when storage volume and land efficiency are the priority and the tank will stay put.
Type 2 — Horizontal bitumen storage tanks
Horizontal (lying cylindrical) tanks keep a low profile and are easier to transport and install than a large vertical tank. For small-to-medium capacities they're often the practical choice: they arrive largely pre-built, sit low for easy access to valves and pumps, and don't need the height clearance a vertical tank does.
They use more ground area for the same volume, so they're less suited to very large storage where land is tight. Choose horizontal for mid-sized plant storage where ease of delivery, low height and simple installation matter more than maximum volume per square metre.

Type 3 — Square / skid-mounted bitumen tanks
Square (rectangular) tanks with an integrated base or skid are built for one thing above all: export and job-site deployment. Their shape uses container space efficiently, and an integrated frame means the tank, burner, insulated pump and controls arrive as one unit that loads into a standard 40HQ container and is ready to run with minimal site work.
This is the format many contractors want for overseas projects — for example a 40 m³ double-heating square tank that handles storage, unloading, internal circulation, external supply and pipeline heat tracing in a single containerised package. Choose square/skid when the tank has to ship efficiently and be commissioned quickly at a remote site.
Type 4 — Bitumen tank containers & transportable tanks
When bitumen has to move — between depots, to remote spreads, or through a port — a transportable heated tank or bitumen tank container comes into play. Built around (or into) an ISO-container footprint, these units prioritise logistics: they stack, ship and handle like standard containers while keeping bitumen heated and pumpable.
The trade-off is that mobility and standardised dimensions cap the volume per unit, and heating a moving tank has its own engineering. Choose this route when your bottleneck is getting hot bitumen from A to B rather than storing a large volume in one fixed place. For most fixed asphalt plants, a stationary vertical, horizontal or skid tank will store more, more cheaply — so match the format to whether your real need is storage or transport.
The factors that decide it (whatever the type)
Once you've narrowed the type, these cross-cutting factors finalise the specification:
- Capacity sizing. Size to real daily throughput plus a buffer for cold starts and peak season — not to a round number.
