How to Reduce Fuel Consumption in Bitumen Decanting: The Science of Flue Gas Utilization

In the global road construction industry, fuel costs are often the largest variable expense when operating bitumen decanting and storage equipment. For many contractors, the traditional method of heating bitumen drums or bags is not just slow—it is energy-intensive and wasteful.
At Feiteng Road Construction Equipment, we’ve spent 15 years engineering a solution to this challenge. The answer lies in a specialized technology known as Secondary Flue Gas Utilization.
The Problem: Where Does the Heat Go?
Traditional bitumen decanters (often called "direct-heating" units) use a burner to heat a combustion chamber. While this provides the necessary heat to melt the bitumen, a massive amount of thermal energy—often exceeding 300°C to 400°C—is lost through the exhaust stack as waste flue gas. This is a significant loss of efficiency for any asphalt plant operation.

The Solution: Feiteng’s Double Heating System
Our YZSL Series and YDST Series utilize an integrated "Double Heating" structure that captures what others waste. Here is the science behind it:
1. The Built-In Thermal Oil Jacket
Unlike separate boiler systems, our decanters feature a built-in combustion chamber wrapped in a 70mm thermal oil jacket. As the burner fires, it heats the thermal oil immediately at the source. This hot oil is then circulated through a network of precision-laid coils throughout the tank, ensuring even heating without bitumen aging.
2. Multi-Row Flue Gas Recovery
Instead of exhausting the hot burner gas directly into the atmosphere, we route it through multi-row seamless flue pipes submerged in the bitumen melting pool. By transferring this thermal energy back into the product, we maximize the heat exchange efficiency.
3. Hot Air Circulation
In our bitumen drum decanters, we use high-powered fans to circulate hot air, combining radiant heat from the coils with convective heat from the exhaust. This ensures that bitumen drums are emptied quickly with less than 0.2% residue.
Efficiency by the Numbers
- 15-20% Fuel Savings: Our double heating tanks consume only 3-5kg of diesel per ton of bitumen.
- Faster Heating: Reaches pumping temperature (110°C - 140°C) significantly faster than traditional models.
- Quality Preservation: Indirect heating prevents coking and preserves the integrity of high-grade bitumen.
Conclusion
Reducing fuel consumption is critical for staying competitive. Feiteng’s integrated, self-heating designs prove that you don’t need an expensive external boiler to achieve high-efficiency results. Ready to optimize your fleet? View our full range of bitumen equipment here.
